Rob Lopez is a freelance designer and a dedicated design educator. He received his BFA and MFA in Industrial Design from the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign.
His most recent work includes research on Latino/Hispanic Industrial Designers in the United States. This research, as part of an Indiana University - Purdue University Fort Wayne Summer Research Grant, will culminate in a book with images and interviews of the designers. Rob has served as design director for the Product Interaction Research Laboratory (PIRL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign for the design of interactive objects that promote stealth exercise for older Americans for New A.G.E. (Active Green Environments) of Urbana, IL. He redesigned “ALBA”, a confocal imaging and fluorescence correlation spectrometer for ISS Inc. of Champaign, IL and has completed many computer generated renderings for Domenico D’Alessandro and Associates of Algonquin, IL.
During his three years at IPFW, Rob taught 3-D Computer Modeling, Computer Art and Design I, Design Fundamentals, Display and Design, Package Design, Senior Project, Senior Project Exhibition, Sequential Design and served as Faculty Liaison for Academic Counseling & Career Services (ACCS) for the Visual Communication and Design Department. He was also active in promoting relationships between VCD and the Northeast Indiana Innovation Center, local art galleries and the City of Fort Wayne.
Rob was both a Visiting Assistant Professor for the Industrial Design Department and an adjunct faculty member for the Graphic Design and Narrative Media Departments at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He taught Computer Applications in Design I and II, Independent Study, Furniture Design, Model making I, Senior Research: Collaborative Product Design for Business, and Special Problems in Design: Graduate Research for the Industrial Design department, Sequential Design for the Graphic Design department and Image Studio for the Narrative Media Department.
Rob’s current research includes investigating the relationship between culture and design, understanding the relationship between design and the environment and developing methodologies for promoting appropriate uses of technology in the classroom.
