Alex Lopez earned his MFA degree in sculpture from Alfred University, NY (1998). He taught at Trinity University and The University of Texas, both located in San Antonio before coming to Southern Illinois University Carbondale.

Alex LopezLopez’s work is diverse, ranging from objects and videos to installations. His approach is that of scientist and anthropologist, observing, evaluating, experimenting and mapping spectacular moments and events. Alex’s explorations of social patterns during child development stages forces his audience to question the severity of compromise and conformity with an unsettling contradictory wholeness, as his work moves between factual and confabulatory memories.

Alex LopezIn conjunction with more serious work, his collaborations with Eric Hollender and the Rickshaw Projects allow an outlet for exploiting ideas of extreme play, “art on the fly”. Some of these collaborative efforts have been published in Perla magazine.
Alex's work has been exhibited in 35 shows including several solo exhibitions. Such spaces include, Hudson Show Room at Artpace; San Antonio Museum of Art; McNay Art Museum, Texas; University of North Texas, Denton; Blanton Museum of Art; Arthouse at the Jones Center, Austin, TX; Robert Turner Gallery, Alfred, NY; and Christie’s, New York. He has been included in several catalogs and has also been reviewed in Art In America, Artlies, and Art Papers.
