
Sally Gradle, Assistant Professor in Art Education, published her article, "The Gnosis of Artmaking and Teaching: Painting the Blue Medicine Buddha," in Educational Insights.

Barbara Bickel, Assistant Professor in Art Education, has a new publication in the online journal, Educational Insights. "Labyrinths as Ritual Art: A Pedagogy of Inquiry/Witnessing/Listening to the Sacred," was a collaborative project with Nane A. Jordan and draws "from the intersections of feminist performance art, ritual practice, and the field of arts-based research in education..."

Joel Feldman, Professor Emeritus, completed a residency in fall 2009 with Three Shadows Photography Center in Caochangdi, an urban village in Beijing, China. Three Shadows was founded and is run by the Chinese husband and wife artists Rong Rong and Inri. Next summer he will do a residency at the Heinrich Böll cottage on Achill Island in Ireland.
Mark Pease, Assistant Professor in Digital Media, has work included in the International Print Center New York's New Prints 2009/Autumn exhibition. Mark's work, shown below, will be on view October 3-December 12, 2009 in the International Print Center gallery at 526 West 26th Street in NYC, with an opening reception on Thursday, October 29, 6-8 pm.

Najjar Abdul Musawwir unveiled his painting honoring Dick Gregory at the Varsity Center for the Arts Hall of Fame on October 8. The painting (right and below) now hangs in the Varsity lobby. Xuhong Shang's solo exhibition, "A Paradise Up in the Air" runs from September 24-December 13, 2009 at the Muskegon Museum of Art, Muskegon, MI. The installation was created exclusively for the museum and visitors will "find themselves immersed in an artificial environment created from landscapes existing in the outside world and from objects suspended away from the gallery walls."

Carma R. Gorman's essay "Religion on Demand: Faith-Based Design" was the lead article in the debut issue of the peer-reviewed journal Design and Culture (March 2009). A paperback edition of Objects, Audiences, and Literatures: Alternative Narratives in the History of Design (Cambridge Scholars Publishing, 2007), a book Gorman co-edited and co-introduced with David Raizman, was issued in April 2009.
The work of Jiyong Lee, Assistant Professor in Glass, will be presented at the 2009 SOFA Chicago with Duane Reed Gallery. Additionally, he will have a solo exhibition of his work at the Duane Reed Gallery. For 2010, he has been invited to SOFA New York, and he will participate in a group exhibition in August 2010 at the New Harmony Gallery, New Harmony, Indiana.

"East meets West" which opened at the Michael Berger Gallery in Pittsburgh, PA, on September 5.
Pattie Chalmers, Assistant Professor in Ceramics, has a solo show in Minneapolis. "Greetings from the Mississippi Mudmaid Museum," shows in the Minneapolis Art Gallery's Creative Electric Studios beginning September 12. The show highlights Chalmers' current study on Mississippi Mudmaids, controversial historical fish-women.
Najjar Abdul-Musawwir, Associate Professor, Painting/Drawing/Core Curriculum, has been selected to receive a three-year appointment as a Judge William Holmes Cook Professor at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. The Cook Professorship is a prestigious position made possible through a gift from the estate of Judge William Holmes Cook. It is open to all tenured or tenure track faculty employed or to be employed by the University, whose employment or continued employment adds to the racial and ethnic diversity of the campus. Cook Professors receive a monetary stipend of $7,500 per year to support their research. Congratulations to Najjar!

Elina Gertsman, Assistant Professor in Art History,and Brepols Publishers have received a Book Publication Subvention from the Medieval Academy of America, for her book The Dance of Death in the Middle Ages: Image, Text, Performance. Founded in 1925, the Medieval Academy of America is the world’s largest professional organization devoted to medieval studies. To be granted this highly competitive subvention, the book “...must be the author's first, must focus substantially on the Middle Ages, must be of high scholarly and intellectual merit, and must have been accepted for publication.”
Alex Lopez, Assistant Professor in Sculpture/Foundations, exhibits his work, in "It's All Part of the Plan," June 3-27, 2009 at SOIL in Seattle, WA; opening reception, Thursday, June 4, 5-8 p.m. Alex exhibits alongside Judith Cottrell and Brian Jobe in this three-person show which "deals with the element of space in line in an individual way-via media and form." Alex exhibited his work, "Installations by Alex Lopez," at the Metropolitan Gallery in St. Louis, February 20-March 20. Professor Lopez has exhibited his work in museums and galleries in Texas, Illinois, New York City, and Chicago. His work has been featured in several catalogues and has been reviewed in "Art in America", "Art Lies", and "Art Papers." This is Alex Lopez's first exhibition in St. Louis.
Rob Lopez, Assistant Professor in Design, received a Faculty Seed Grant for his proposal, "Brown Design, Latino/Hispanic Industrial Designers in the United States." He also received an additional one-month Summer 2009 Faculty Seed Grant for this proposal.

Xuhong Shang, Professor in Painting, has a solo exhibition, "Momentary Project: Painting, Photograph, Installation," at Stir Gallery, Shanghai, China, July 25-August 30, 2009 (images above). He will have a solo exhibition/installation "Installation Project" at the Muskegon Museum of Art in Muskegon, Michigan in 2009. He created a new set-specific installation work for the exhibition. Additionally, his work was reviewed in the March/April 2009 issue of NY Arts Magazine.
Steve Belletire and Jerry Monteith have been promoted to the rank of Professor effective July 1, 2009. Congratulations to Steve and Jerry on this achievement!
Barbara Bickel, Assistant Professor in Art Education, won the Outstanding Dissertation in Arts Based Educational Research award from the American Educational Research Association (AERA) for her dissertation, "Living the Divine Spiritually and Politically: Art, Ritual and Performative Pedagogy in Women's Multi-faith Leadership."
Harris Deller, Professor in Ceramics, has been named the Excellence Through Commitment Outstanding Teacher for the College of Liberal Arts.
Cheonae Kim, Visiting Instructor (Artist in Residence) will exhibit her paintings in the solo show, "Murmur," at the Zolla Lieberman Gallery in Chicago in April 2009. Opening reception is April 17, 5-8 p.m. Professor Kim's third public commission, an installation of two ceramic tiled walls in the therapeutic pool of the Laguna Honda Hospital, San Francisco, CA., was completed in February 2009.
Jerry Monteith, Associate Professor of Sculpture, exhibits his work in WOOD: Two Perspectives, along with Stewart Wessel (Architecture) at the University Museum from March 24-May 8, 2009. Jerry also exhibited his work in the solo show, "Splendid Flaws" at the Nu-Art Series Metropolitan Gallery, St. Louis, MO , Friday, October 17. Work created over the last decade by Professor Monteith was shown.
Pattie Chalmers, Assistant Professor, Ceramics, exhibited in two invitational shows this spring in Eau Claire, WI and Baltimore, MD. She has been invited to give a lecture & workshop at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada, and has a solo exhibition coming up this summer in Minneapolis, MN.
Jiyong Lee, Assistant Professor, Glass, was featured in an article about his work using adhesive in glass in the Glass Art Society Journal in 2008. His work was also featured in the Spring 2008 SIUC Perspectives magazine. During the summer Professor Lee taught at Pilchuck Glass School in Stanwood, Washington. Pilchuck is the most prestigious glass institute in the world for intensive workshops and artist in residence programs. His work was invited in the main exhibition of International Craft Biennale in Korea and during this fall 2008 his work was shown in Englewood, New Jersey, Auburn University, Alabama, and St. Louis, Missouri.
Kristy Summers, Visiting Assistant Professor (Fine Art Fellow), had work accepted in "The Sculpture Salmagundi XII," a juried show at the Arts Center at the Imperial Centre, Rocky Mount, NC. One work of Professor Summers, “Ball Joint,” was one of 10 selected for the outdoor exhibition, and a second work, "A Weeks Worth of Travel," was selected for the indoor section of the exhibition. The indoor exhibition was shown from October 3, 2008 through January 12, 2009 and the outdoor exhibition runs from October 3, 2008 through August 31, 2009.
Dr. Elina Gertsman received a contract for her book, The Dance of Death in the Middle Ages: Image, Text, Performance (forthcoming from Brepols in 2009); published an edited book entitled Visualizing Medieval Performance: Perspectives, Histories, Contexts (Ashgate, 2008); and, most importantly, gave birth to her beautiful baby boy last April.
Dr. Carma Gorman's article "Religion on Demand: Faith-Based Design" will appear in the March 2009 debut issue of *Design and Culture,* a new peer-reviewed journal published by Berg.
Dr. Stacey Sloboda, Assistant Professor in Art History, was awarded a fellowship as a Visiting Scholar at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven for Spring 2009.
